The Performance Trap and the One Question That Breaks It (Part 2)

In Part 1, we met Lira— the invisible saint. Always on. Always praised. Always exhausted. Volunteering when no one else will?
She was addicted to approval and applauded for it… until her soul hit a wall.
Here’s why that matters.
You’re not exhausted because you’re busy — you’re exhausted because you’ve built your worth on being needed.
You keep calling it service. But deep down, it’s survival. You don’t feel free to say no — because your “yes” is where you think your value lives. That’s not the gospel. That’s a performance trap.
Jesus never asked you to earn love with a church calendar. He’s not measuring your worth by your availability. He’s not impressed by burnout. He knows that connecting with Him bears fruit effortlessly. And if approval is the fuel keeping your faith going? You’re not following Jesus. You’re chasing applause in His name.
Here’s one thing you can do right now:
Before you say yes to anything this week, ask Holy Spirit: “Is this for You — or is this for me?” Then stop. Be still. Listen to the whispers. And listen to your gut. That pause? That’s where striving breaks — and real connection begins.
When you cultivate a relationship with Jesus, you’re building a vibrant spiritual inner Kingdom.
You weren’t created to be useful — you were created to be connected.
Burnout doesn’t start with too much to do. It starts with a deep belief that your worth is tied to what you produce. Religious systems reward that lie. They hand you a “servant heart” label — and you wear it like armor. But inside? You’re frying.
Let’s be clear: burnout isn’t your calling — beloved is. When love leads, you don’t have to perform to matter. Real fruit comes from connection, not performance. Approval is exhausting. Pleasing Him instead of others — that’s everything.
Just by asking that one simple question, your schedule will start to revolve around the Spirit’s quiet leading.
And always remember this: Practice doesn’t make perfect in a relationship. Practice makes progress.
Take your approval addiction seriously. Today is the day to start breaking your agreement with the hustle — even if it means disappointing people who loved your performance more than your presence.
Next time, we’re going straight into a hidden idol so many of us have — one that’s been sabotaging your ability to rest, receive, and be real.
And send this to someone who’s exhausted from being everyone’s “go-to.” The one who serves with a smile… but secretly wonders if they matter without it.
