When demons whisper, and you start calling it identity — that’s not personality.
There’s a name tag you’ve been wearing. It doesn’t say “Loved” or “Known” or “Significant.” It says “Too Much.” Or “Angry.” Or “Just Like Your Mother.”
But what if that label didn’t come from God? What if the thought you’ve been calling truth…was actually planted by the enemy?
I once mentored a woman who spoke in disclaimers.
“I probably shouldn’t say this…” “I don’t want to be too much…” “I’m not trying to stir anything up…”
It was like every sentence had to sneak past a guard in her head before it was allowed out.
She didn’t whisper — but everything in her sounded like she was afraid to be loud. Afraid to be wrong. Afraid to take up space. I asked her, “Why do you talk like that?”
She paused… and then said: “I guess I’ve always been like this.” That’s when it hit me. She didn’t choose this voice. She inherited it — from survival, from fear, from somewhere in her past where speaking freely came with a consequence.
And now, years later, she wasn’t asking if it was true. She was just assuming it was hers. But it wasn’t. It was something she named to stay safe. And once she named it — she started defending it. Not because she was being fake. But because no one had ever asked her, “Who gave you that name?”
That woman didn’t just accept a quiet voice. She agreed with a spirit that convinced her silence was safer than truth. And once that agreement happened — her mind didn’t question it. It just reinforced it. That’s what happens when we give language to a lie. We’re not just repeating it — we’re releasing it. “By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” — Matthew 12:37 This isn’t a poetic verse. It’s a courtroom ruling. Every time you name yourself outside of what God has said, you’re not just venting. You’re decreeing in a spiritual courtroom — and the enemy is standing there with your paperwork. You became the mouthpiece for your own oppression. Because the enemy doesn’t need your worship…He just needs your words.
